Joe Evans and Cassie Waits to preach on ‘Day 1’

Senior pastor and associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Marietta, Ga.

The Rev. Joe Evans, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Marietta, Ga., is the featured preacher June 25 on “Day 1” with host Peter Wallace, the nationally broadcast ecumenical radio program also accessible as a podcast and online at Day1.org, and the Rev. Cassie Waits, associate pastor at the church, is the featured preacher on July 2. Hear Day1 in the Atlanta area on WSB 95.5 and 750 AM Sundays at 7:05 a.m.

“Faith Alone,” Evans’ sermon for June 25, is drawn from Romans 6:1-11. Evans says, “’You should, you should, you should,’ the preachers have said, but that’s only what the preachers have said. God says, ‘I love you, I love you, I love you.’”

“Extreme Faith,” Waits’ sermon for July 2, is based on Genesis 22:1-14, the story of the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. “What Abraham does is truly appalling,” she says. “Why do we come back to the story of Genesis 22? Because it speaks to our own struggles with righteousness. It speaks to our own questions about what faith requires and of what God requires of us.”

Evans came to Marietta in June 2017 from First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, Tenn., where he had served since 2011. He earlier served Good Shepherd Presbyterian in Lilburn, Ga. He grew up in First Presbyterian Church of Marietta. A graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., he earned his M.Div. at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. He has published five books of sermons.

Waits, a former industrial engineer, has served as associate pastor for discipleship at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta since 2019. A graduate of Georgia Tech with an M.B.A. from Emory University, she earned her M.Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary and a Th.M. from Emory’s Candler School of Theology.

The programs include interviews with Evans and Waits conducted by Wallace, who is also executive producer.

“Day 1” has been broadcast every week for 78 years, formerly as “The Protestant Hour.” Featuring outstanding preachers from the mainline denominations, “Day 1” is currently distributed to more than 200 radio stations across America and overseas. The program is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media, based in Atlanta, Ga. For more information, check the program’s website, http://day1.org.
