Trinity Explores
Monday, February 24 | 7:00-9:00 pm | Williams Hall
Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3003 Howell Mill Rd, Atlanta, GA 30327
Guest Speaker: Dr. Samer Shehata, professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oklahoma
Topic: “War, Revolution, and Suffering in the Middle East”
The lecture will address the underlying drivers of instability and conflict in the Middle East over the last decade and a half. Why did this already troubled region experience unprecedented levels of political turbulence and violence, including regime breakdown, civil wars, regional competition, and the emergence of radical non-sate actors, during this period? What role did the 2003 Iraq war and the 2011 Arab “Spring” play in shattering the old “regional order” and generating instability for the Middle East and many of its inhabitants? The lecture will also examine how the struggle to shape a new Middle East regional order has entailed increased competition, conflict, and unprecedented levels of intervention by regional actors, with disastrous consequences for millions of people in the Middle East.
Trinity Explores is free and open to the public. Childcare is provided.
